How to Choose the Right Krav Maga School for You

Not all Krav Maga Schools are created equal! Choosing the proper school to train at is crucial, especially when your safety is at stake! Krav Maga is more popular now than ever before and we are seeing schools pop up on every corner! It can be confusing for new students to know which schools are legitimate and which ones are just out to make money.

Krav Maga Dallas™ shares the crucial questions you need to ask when scouting out potential Krav Maga training centers.

1. What are you looking for?

Before committing to a Krav Maga school, you should consider your objectives and end goals. Are you more interested in self-defense skills or competitions? Are you more focused on losing weight or building mass? Keeping in mind what you ideally want to achieve can help narrow down your choices by looking at what programs are offered.

Be wary of the schools that claim to be experts in multiple traditional and non-traditional martial arts, including Krav Maga. Most likely, they are simply using the Krav Maga name to lure people into their doors and sign them up for a watered-down program. If you are looking for Krav Maga, find a legitimate Krav Maga school – not a martial art school who claims to teach Krav Maga.

2. Affiliation

Always ask what affiliation, if any, a school is organized through as this will tell you the legitimacy of training offered. Look for trusted organizations such as Krav Maga Worldwide, who maintains the highest standards of Krav Maga training and is trusted by thousands of law/military agencies. Don’t waste your time (and money!) in other organizations who may teach impractical and ineffective moves. Ask yourself and the school these important questions:

  • Who is the head of the organization?

  • How old is this organization?

  • Is the curriculum static, or are things constantly being updated to suit real-world occurrences?

  • How does the organization ensure its school’s teaching and instructors quality? What are the requirements to become an instructor?

Krav Maga Dallas™ is the only Krav Maga Worldwide training center in North Dallas.

3. Instructors

As previously stated, it’s very important to know about the legitimacy of the school you’re considering and that includes the training of the instructors. There are far too many schools that say they teach Krav Maga but were never certified by a recognized organization. Make sure to ask these questions about the instructors:

  • What is the background of the chief instructor? What about the other instructors?

  • Where do their belts come from?

  • How often are instructor required to retest for their own certifications, if at all?

  • Do the instructors actively train themselves in Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is an open system, meaning that the curriculum constantly changes based on the threats that are seen in the streets. If instructors are not actively training, then they are not aware of changes in the system and most likely, teaching students incorrect techniques. 4. Expenses

Many schools exist with one objective: making money. Make sure to ask about any hidden fees or mandatory equipment that you might end up having to pay for in the future. Asking these key questions can help you differentiate legitimate schools from less credible ones:

  • What are the monthly costs? How about per class?

  • Are there additional testing fees?

  • Is the equipment mandatory? What about uniforms?

Most traditional martial arts are known as “belt-factories” because they make most of their money by promoting students through their system. Legitimate Krav Maga schools are vastly different – We don’t focus on testing or competitions, only the self-defense skills and safety of our students.

5. Time investment

Some schools have expectations for their students and encourage regular training to promote muscle memory as well as overall fitness. Some schools could care less whether you come to practice or not.

  • How often can students train?

  • How many times a week is recommended?

  • Do they send reminders, have events or make an extra effort for their students?

Krav Maga Dallas’™ membership options will always get you access to unlimited classes. We want our students training as much as possible to become stronger and safer.
